This landscape format, colour print captures the warm, orange hues of sunset. The view is across the Duddon Estuary, from the Sandscale Haws Nature Reserve, Cumbria, England. The s outhwestern Lakeland fells can be seen behind, notably Black Combe which is famous for being ‘not quite a mountain’. At 1970ft it falls just 30 feet short. The nature reserve is managed by the National Trust and is home to a wide variety of wildlife. Almost out of shot to the right of the picture is the village of Askam-in-Furness. The long pier stretching out into the estuary is a remnant of the village’s iron industry. It is made of slag and many of the dunes nearby are formed from waste heaps. What was once an industrial area is now a haven for nature and its fauna and flora have earned it the designation as a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI).
