Sarcococca hookeriana 'Purple Stem' is a wonderfully compact and free-flowering Hilliers Nursey selection of the Himalayan (Southeastern Tibet and nearby China) Sarcococca hookeria na var. digyna. This boxwood family member makes a superb, texturally interesting evergreen groundcover for the woodland garden. The 18" long, upright stalks are adorned with narrow, glossy green leaves. The dusty purple stems spread slowly via underground stolons, forming a 4' wide patch in 10 years. In late winter/early spring, the deer-resistant plants are laden with small but very fragrant white flowers. While Sarcococca 'Purple Stem' loves rich organic soils, ours have thrived in less than stellar soils in deep shade. Show more
