About the Sashiko design: This Sashiko design dates back to the 1600's and would have been found stitched on cuffs, shoulder's, collars, knees and elbows of clothing. Wherever the cloth became thin and weak with wear, a patch of stronger cloth was layered and sashiko stitched over it to keep the garment usable. This dense design is a style of Sashiko stitching called Hitome-sashi (one stitch Sashiko). To stitch the design do the following steps first stitch each horizontal line from edge to the other, straight across next stitch each vertical line from edge to the other, straight across finally stitch all the diagonal lines from edge to the other, straight across The design will emerge from the accumulation of the lines of single stitches.
