For this week’s tutorial subject, I was specifically looking for a grade 1, as I feel we are possibly a bit light on these. As soon as I saw this photo I was inspired by the weathered old timbers of the rustic barn, complimented by the tall structure of the old iron tower, sitting under a heavy, threatening sky. I also liked the tall marsh grasses in the foreground, which I decided to treat quite loosely, with just a few touches of body colour to suggest more detail. At first glance it might look a bit too involved for a grade 1, but while there is a bit of detailing required to suggest the old timber structure of the barn itself, much of the scene can be established quite quickly with plenty of wet into wet washes. A really enjoyable subject to tackle for beginners and more experienced artists alike. Happy painting,Geoff
