Known by many names depending on the region, the Saskatoon berry, or Serviceberry, plant is a cold hardy, deciduous shrub with clusters of delicate white flowers in early spring, resembling apple blossoms, followed by flavourful purple-blue fruit in late June, resembling blueberries in appearance. The fruit have a sweet, slightly nutty flavour with hints of almond. Serviceberries are packed with antioxidants, vitamins, minerals and fibre. The fruits are enjoyed both fresh and cooked, and make excellent jams and pies.
