The Satin Weave Gradient Hat is an easy, playful colorwork project that uses simple repeating sequences to transition between two colors. As the name suggests, this pattern borrows ideas from the world of weaving. Its colorwork sequences are inspired by diagrams of satin weave structures. In weaving, these structures create smooth fabric surfaces without apparent lines. Applied to colorwork, the principle of satin weaving can be used to create smooth fields of color. Needles & Notions: 16” 3mm circular needles for ribbing 16” 4mm circular needles for body 4mm double-pointed needles or longer circular needles (if using magic loop method) for crown Tapestry needle for finishing crown & sewing in ends Stitch marker Gauge: For stockinette stitch on 4mm needles, 18 stitches x 24 rows per 4” x 4”, after blocking. Finished Measurements: This pattern is “one size fits most”. At the given gauge, the hat’s circumference will measure approximately 21 ¾”. This will give neutral ease for smaller heads, and up to 1 ¼” negative ease for larger heads. Recommended Yarn: You will need 50g in two different colors of worsted weight yarn. For my sample, I used Cascade 220, but you can use any yarn of similar weight that has a lightweight, springy feel and retains its bounce after blocking.
