Studio Puck has been working from a collection of antique books in a Florentine atelier on the Lungarno Guicciardini since 1980 - taking plates from those books and bringing them onto new paper, by hand. Savana is the studio's series on the big cats. Each piece is a head-and-shoulders study - the leopard in three-quarter profile, the caracal with its tufted ear - drawn from the eighteenth- and nineteenth-century zoological plates that European naturalists made of the African savanna. The illustrations are hand-painted by the studio in full colour, the way the originals were hand-coloured at the time, and set on a deep matte-black ground so the animal sits forward off the page. Each work is framed in a round, deep-black wooden frame. This brand is named after one of them. Exclusive to Australia.
