Scandium's atomic number is 21 and its symbol is Sc. Pure scandium is found and mined from deposits of rare-earth and uranium compounds. The only known naturally occurring concentr ated sources of this element are in rare minerals found in Scandinavia and Madagascar. It is more commonly mined and used in the form of scandium oxide. It is used in aluminum alloys to strengthen aluminum as well as increase the metals heat resistance in aircraft. In pure ingots, scandium is valued at about $120US per gram, which is almost twice the value of gold.
