What’s a Scene Machine? Scene Machines are hand-powered automata kits: learners fold a laser-cut cardboard frame, then build a cam-and-follower mechanism from paper straws and foam wheels so that turning the crank sets part of a scene moving. From there, they add their own art, characters, and story to grow it into a one-of-a-kind animated scene, built right around that mechanism. It’s an engaging way to bring ideas like cams and followers, mechanical iteration, and visual storytelling to life. Once the round-and-round mechanism is working, ambitious builders can push further and unlock an up-and-down motion by moving the axle to an offset hole in the cam, or a side-to-side motion using a linkage of paired cams.
