Schefflera actinophylla is a synonym for Heptapleurum actinophyllum as the plant was reclassified. Heptapleurum actinophyllum is part of the Araliaceae family and its native range is S. New Guinea to N. Australia where it grows as a scrambling tree in the wet tropical biome. It uses its roots to clasp itself around the trees, similar to strangler figs. Leaves are compound palmate, with 7-16 stalked leaflets arranged in a whorl. Genus name comes from the Greek words hepta meaning ‘seven’ and pleuron meaning ‘rib side’; this is in reference to the leaflets. Specific epithet is derived from the Greek word aktis, meaning ‘a ray’ and pullon meaning 'a leaf', referring to the whorled arrangement of the leaves. Water: If you’re giving your plant bright indirect light, potting mix ought to be evenly moist. Potting mix: A well draining mix composed of coco coir, perlite or vermiculite, orchid bark and worm castings. Fertilising: Feed your plant every other watering during the growing season or when you observe active growth. You can dilute fertiliser to half the recommended amount but never add more. Temperature: 18-32°C. Humidity: Heptapleurum would prefer humidity over 60% but do well to adapt to average home humidity. Heptapleurum actinophyllum are toxic, keep out of reach of pets and children.
