Like other beetles, weevils undergo complete metamorphosis. Eggs are well-hidden and hatch into caterpillar-like grubs with a singular focus on eating. After pupating, the weevil takes on its famous, charismatic form with a long rostrum (snout). These specialized mouthparts allow weevils to bore into vegetation. Eupholus feeds on wild yam, which is poisonous to most other animals. Its bright colors warn would-be predators that this weevil makes an unpleasant meal.
