Difficulty: Beginner-friendly. Growth style: Trailing and climbing vine; a steady grower. Mature size: Vines can trail several feet over time — can vary by growing conditions. Lifespan: Can live for many years with regular care — varies by growing conditions. Pet safety: Not pet-safe — toxic to cats and dogs if chewed. Keep out of reach of pets. Best for: Shelves, hanging baskets, desks, and bright corners. Vibe/personality: Easygoing, trailing jungle look. It's forgiving enough for beginners yet still looks lush, which is exactly what makes it such a staple. In lower light, growth may slow and any variegation can look less vibrant. Avoid harsh direct sun, which can scorch the leaves. Watering: Let the top 2 inches of soil dry out between waterings — Scindapsus is a little more drought-tolerant than true pothos and dislikes staying wet. Empty any saucer so the roots don't sit in water. Humidity: Comfortable in normal household humidity; it appreciates a little extra but doesn't need it. Temperature: Typical room temperatures (roughly 65–85°F). Keep it away from cold drafts and heating or AC vents. Soil: A well-draining houseplant potting mix in a pot with a drainage hole. Fertilizer: Feed lightly with a balanced houseplant fertilizer in spring and summer; pause in winter. Pruning: Trim the vines anytime to keep growth full and bushy — the cuttings root easily in water. Care tip: If the vines get leggy or the color looks dull, move it to a brighter indirect spot. Best Display Spots Bookshelf or floating shelf: vines spill over the edge for a lively look. Hanging basket: grows into a full, trailing curtain of foliage. Desk or office corner: handles indirect light well. Living room plant stand: an easy, leafy accent. Kitchen shelf near a window: happy in bright, indirect light. Best For / Think Twice If Best for: Beginners and busy plant owners Gift buyers Desks, shelves, offices, and plant stands Anyone who wants an easygoing, trailing plant Pothos and trailing-plant fans Think twice if: Homes where pets may chew leaves — it is toxic to cats and dogs Very dark rooms Anyone who tends to overwater plants Shoppers wanting a large statement plant right away Botanical Exhibit Notes Despite the "pothos" nickname, Scindapsus 'Coriaceus' is actually a Scindapsus — a close cousin of true pothos (Epipremnum). Scindapsus is native to Southeast Asia, where it grows as a climbing vine. Its leaves have a satiny, matte texture often marked with silvery tones that look more pronounced in bright, indirect light. In the wild it climbs tree trunks and the leaves can enlarge as it matures — this can vary with growing conditions. Like pothos, it's easy to propagate — cuttings root readily in water.
