Description Scindapsus Coriaceus (Variegated) Care Guide FAQ/Common Issues Scindapsus Coriaceus (Variegated) is a rare tropical aroid in the family Araceae, native to the rainforests of Borneo and surrounding Southeast Asian islands. It grows as a climbing vine along tree trunks in its natural habitat, reaching upward through the forest canopy with the support of aerial roots. The leaves are large, thick, and leathery, with a surface texture that feels almost waxy to the touch. Each leaf carries irregular patches of yellow variegation scattered across a deep green base, and no two leaves pattern alike. It grows as a trailing or climbing vine, sending out long stems that drape downward or attach to a support structure. Reliable flowering details for this species in cultivation are not well documented, so the leaves remain its most-watched feature. It does filter indoor air, including formaldehyde and other airborne toxins, as it grows. A hanging hook or high shelf works well for this trailing aroid, keeping the long vines off the floor and the plant out of reach of cats, dogs, and small children. Cats and dogs shouldn't be left to nibble or eat it, and the sap can cause skin and paw irritation on contact. Rotate it every few weeks so each side receives even light exposure. It thrives near a kitchen where ambient moisture from cooking keeps the air around it consistently humid. Scindapsus Coriaceus (Variegated) grows well in bright indirect light, away from south-facing windows where direct sun scorches the leaves. Water it every 10 to 14 days, allowing the top inch of soil to dry out between waterings; it wilts slightly when dry. grows best in a chunky, well-draining mix of potting soil, perlite, and orchid bark in roughly equal parts. It prefers temperatures between 65°F and 85°F and should be kept away from air conditioning vents and heating units. is a slow to moderate grower; feed it with a balanced liquid fertilizer once a month during spring and summer only. It is hardy in USDA zones 10 to 12, where frost is rare and temperatures stay above 35°F year-round. It grows outdoors in Hawaii, southern Florida, and southernmost California. It can move outside for summer in warmer continental states, provided it is brought back indoors before nighttime temperatures drop below 55°F and placed under cover where rain cannot drench the soil. Q: Is Scindapsus Coriaceus (Variegated) safe for pets? A: It should be kept well out of reach. Cats and dogs shouldn't be left to nibble or eat it, and the sap can irritate skin and paws on contact. Q: How sensitive is this plant to being moved to a new spot? A: Scindapsus Coriaceus (Variegated) can be sensitive to relocation and may drop a leaf or pause growth while adjusting to a new position. Q: Can survive a 10-day trip without being watered? A: Yes. Water it thoroughly just before you leave, and it can go up to ten days without another drink. Q: What happens if this plant is overwatered? A: roots are prone to rot if the soil stays wet too long. Yellowing leaves at the base and a soggy, compacted growing mix are the first signs of too much water. Q: Does do well under office lighting? A: It can grow under LED office lights, though growth will be slower and the variegation less pronounced than in a brighter spot near a window. Q: How do I encourage even growth on this plant? A: Give it a quarter turn every two to three weeks so all sides of face toward the light source evenly.
