It is a calcium aluminosilicate mineral with the chemical formula CaAl2Si3O10·3H2O. Scolecite forms in volcanic bubbles called vesicles along with other zeolites. Sometimes chemical analysis is needed to determine if a specimen is Natrolite or Scolecite; even a single crystal may contain part of each mineral within different zones of the same crystal.
