What separates the Surf Scoter 22 Cruiser from the Pilothouse version is its extra 18 inches in the cabin, allowing an enclosed head and a larger galley. The cockpit is 18 inches shorter than it is in the Pilothouse version. Since it has been over 20 years since Sam Devlin designed and built the first of his venerable Surf Scoter 22 vessels, this is an updated design. The Cruiser model has a stretched Pilothouse with an enclosed head, making cruising adventures more comfortable for the captain and crew! The pilothouse, with 6'4" headroom, still has plenty of room for a galley and two helm seats. Under the foredeck, you’ll find sitting headroom in the port and starboard berths. A filler converts the two berths into a single huge double berth. This new model is a little wider than the previous version, resulting in greater stability. With a 90-hp outboard on the stern, the top speed is 26 mph. At a cruising speed of 18 mph, you'll burn less than 4 gallons of fuel per hour. Among the many changes in our lives over the last 20 years, it is almost impossible today to buy a 2-stroke outboard engine. Small diesel inboards and larger diesel stern-drives have come and gone, and 4-cycle outboards have taken over the market. These days, with the cost of everything boat-related in the stratosphere, 4-cycle outboards make the most sense. They are wonderfully quiet, smooth-running, and efficient. An outboard on the transom leaves more space in the cockpit for fishing, or for long-distance cruising gear and stores.
