Distinctively shaped Pict shields are included.The Picts, the “Painted People”, dominated northern Scotland from the 3rd century A.D., raiding by land and sea and threatening Roman and Romano-British frontiers.Fighting in close order with long spears and light javelin support, they could even repel cavalry. From the 5th century, the Scots crossed from Ireland and founded the kingdom of Dál Riata in western Scotland.
