Scribbled Dogface Puffer – Arothron mappa The Scribbled Dogface Puffer (Arothron mappa) is an exceptionally distinctive large marine pufferfish, recognised by the intricate maze-like network of dark lines covering its pale body. Also known as the Map Puffer or Scribbled Pufferfish, it originates from tropical Indo-Pacific lagoons, sheltered reefs and deeper reef drop-offs. Intelligent, inquisitive and highly interactive, this impressive species can become a genuine centrepiece animal, but its considerable adult size, powerful beak and destructive feeding behaviour make it suitable only for very large, specialist marine aquariums. Aquarium specimens may remain smaller, but this is an exceptionally large, heavy-bodied pufferfish and its enclosure must be planned around its full potential adult size. Water Type:Marine Origin / Natural Habitat:Widely distributed throughout the tropical Indo-Pacific, from East Africa and South Africa eastwards to Samoa, north to southern Japan and south to Queensland and New Caledonia. It inhabits clear lagoons, sheltered seaward reefs and reef drop-offs, generally remaining close to caves, coral structures or other shelter. Juveniles may occur in shallower protected habitats, while adults are frequently associated with deeper reef slopes. The Scribbled Dogface Puffer may learn to recognise its keeper and can become highly responsive at feeding time, but it should not be mistaken for a peaceful community fish. It may bite slower tank mates, damage fins and consume a wide range of mobile invertebrates. Compatibility varies between individuals, so tank mates must be selected conservatively. Diet:An omnivorous predator that naturally feeds on algae, sponges and benthic invertebrates. In the aquarium, provide a varied marine-based diet including whole or chopped shell-on prawns, cockles, mussels, clams, crab, squid, krill and other hard-shelled foods. Regular access to crunchy, shell-on foods is essential because its fused beak-like teeth grow continuously and must be worn down naturally. Soft foods alone may contribute to dental overgrowth. Avoid routinely feeding freshwater feeder fish or fatty mammal meat, as neither provides appropriate long-term nutrition. Minimum Tank Size:A minimum aquarium volume of approximately 2,000 litres is recommended for long-term care, with a larger system preferable for a fully grown adult or when keeping substantial tank mates. A long, wide aquarium footprint is more useful than height alone and must provide extensive open swimming space. Behaviour & Activity:Usually solitary and active during daylight hours. The Scribbled Dogface Puffer cruises steadily around rockwork, investigates its surroundings and may rearrange or bite aquarium décor. It often develops a strong feeding response and may follow its keeper along the front glass. When threatened, a pufferfish can inflate its body by taking in water. This is a defensive response rather than normal behaviour and should never be deliberately encouraged. Suitable caves and large sheltered areas should be available, while the rockwork must remain open enough for this bulky fish to turn comfortably. Reef Safe:Not Reef Safe The Scribbled Dogface Puffer is unsuitable for a reef aquarium. It may consume or damage shrimps, crabs, snails, clams, worms, echinoderms, sponges and other benthic invertebrates. Corals may also be bitten or disturbed, and unsecured structures can be displaced by its large body and powerful beak. It is best maintained in a very large fish-only or fish-only-with-live-rock system. Special Requirements or Care Notes:Requires an exceptionally large, mature marine aquarium with powerful biological filtration, efficient protein skimming, strong oxygenation and a substantial maintenance schedule. Large puffers produce considerable waste, particularly when fed shellfish and other meaty foods. Provide stable rockwork with wide caves and sheltered resting areas, but avoid sharp or unstable decorations. Any equipment inside the aquarium should be protected where possible, as curious puffers may bite heater guards, cables, tubing and other fittings. Do not lift or transport the fish in a standard net unless absolutely unavoidable. Pufferfish can become entangled by their teeth or spines and may inflate when distressed. They should remain submerged during transfer whenever possible, as swallowing air can cause serious difficulty. Members of the pufferfish family may contain potent toxins within their tissues and internal organs. The fish must never be eaten and should not be handled unnecessarily. Wash hands after aquarium maintenance and keep the animal away from children and pets. The Scribbled Dogface Puffer should normally be kept singly. Potential tank mates must be large, robust and able to avoid its bite, while aggressive species likely to harass or injure the puffer should also be avoided.
