Scrovegni Chapel is Giotto's frescoed chapel in Padua, Italy, built from Charlotte's own photographs of the chapel interior. Using her signature multi layer photographic technique, Charlotte moves around the monument and layers views from many angles onto one surface, the way a film editor cuts a scene together from different shot scales and camera setups. The layers here open outward. Lines run from the center of the artwork to every corner, dividing the room into facets, and the painted walls travel out along them. The vault holds the middle, deep blue with gold stars and the medallions set into it, the Madonna and Child at the top of the frame. Below it the room narrows to the altar, small and deep in the frame, under a round window. Everything else is fresco. The layering carries the panels outward until one scene runs into the next. Tall windows come through on both sides, their leaded glass keeping its pattern under everything laid over it. Giotto painted this around 1305, and what he is known for is giving painting depth and human weight. The layering does not take that away. The figures keep their faces. There is more here than one look holds, and things come forward that you missed the time before. The room is not large. The painting covers every wall, with nothing left plain. This is what it is like to remember standing in the middle of it.
