It descends steeply from the left tip of the plane, rolls across the ground, turns up sharply on the right and rejoins the underside of the plane. Aperture: One large egg-shaped void tilted on its axis — full and rounded on the right, pulled to a narrow point at the lower left where the sweep crosses itself. Floor contact: A single compact rounded sole, sitting well off centre, carrying the entire piece on one small footprint. Cantilever: The plane reaches far beyond that sole in one direction and only a short way in the other, so the balance is deliberately lopsided. Structure: Nothing opens and nothing is fixed on. A Statement of Nature Balance is the first thing the eye argues with here. A plane this long, resting on a footprint this small, ought to tip — and it plainly does not. The whole design is an answer to that question, worked out in one unbroken run of timber. What makes it hold is the geometry of the sweep. The band leaves the plane at one tip, drops on a steep diagonal, flattens across the floor and climbs the far side to meet the plane again. That closed path turns the load back on itself, and because the sole sits toward the heavy end rather than the middle, the long overhang is counterweighted by the mass of the curve instead of by any hidden ballast. Set against pale plaster in a sunlit entry, the result is less furniture than punctuation — a single confident mark on a blank wall, with an egg of light held inside it. Natural Materials & Craftsmanship Everything you can see is Natural Solid Wood, and the sweep is carved from the mass rather than laminated or steam-bent into shape. That decision is why the figure behaves the way it does in the photographs: the streaking is not applied along the curve, it is the timber's own growth exposed at whatever angle the cut happens to reach it. Watch what the flame pattern does around the aperture. On the outer flank it opens into broad russet bands. Where the band tightens toward the crossing point at the lower left, those bands compress into dense parallel lines. Along the inner wall of the void the figure turns the corner and keeps going, which is why that wall is polished to the same standard as the outside — the opening exists to be looked through, so nothing about it can be treated as a back face. The flared tips of the plane demand the most patience. Material is taken off in very small passes toward the ends, testing the springiness by hand as the section thins, until the lip reaches a point that feels crisp on a fingertip yet has no sharp arris anywhere along it. Colour is specified as a tone finish rather than a species: Brown Tone Finish, Walnut Tone Finish, Oak Tone Finish and Black Tone Finish. Sculptural Design Two parts, one of which is arguably not a separate part at all. The plane: a single flat working surface, level along its full length, drawn as an elongated pebble with a wandering outline. Both ends taper and flick upward slightly. No tray, no groove, no cut-out, no fitting of any kind. The sweep: one continuous carved band. It leaves the left tip on a steep diagonal, thickens as it rolls onto the floor, then rises on the right in a tight curve and blends back into the underside of the plane without a visible seam. The void: a single tilted egg-shaped opening enclosed by the sweep and the plane above it. Its widest point sits high and to the right; its narrowest point is the crossing at lower left. The sole: one compact rounded pad, flattened where it beds onto the floor, positioned under the heavier side of the curve. There is no four-point stance, no plinth and no separate support. Storage: none. The piece gives you a surface and an opening, and asks for nothing to be installed in it. The single small footprint pays off in tight rooms. Almost the entire floor beneath the plane stays clear and sweepable, a rug can run underneath without being pierced at four points, and against a wall the piece takes up far less visual ground than its width suggests. The narrow depth keeps it clear of the walking line, while the void lets the wall colour through so a long overhang never reads as a solid block of shadow. Versatile Placement Slim through the depth, dramatic in profile, and best given a plain wall to work against. Entryway: the piece that greets the door — a bowl, a key tray, and enough open floor beneath it for a pair of shoes. Hallway: carried along a long blank run, where the tilted void frames a moving patch of daylight on the plaster behind. Living room: beneath a large canvas, or floated behind a sofa where the sweep reads cleanly from both faces. Behind a sofa: a ledge for a lamp and a stack of books, with the open base keeping the seating area visually connected to the room. Gallery corner or landing: as a pedestal for one or two objects, with the console itself carrying the display. Each names a colour applied to the surface, not a kind of timber — the console is carved from Natural Solid Wood whichever you choose. The photographs show a warm reddish tone in which the flame streaking is at its most theatrical; the Oak Tone Finish calms that figure considerably, and the Black Tone Finish erases it altogether and leaves you reading nothing but the line and the void. Natural grain and tonal variation make every piece one of a kind, so the pattern of streaks crossing your sweep belongs to your table alone. Production photos or a short video can be sent before dispatch if you ask. Minor dimensional variation may occur due to the handcrafted process. Care & Maintenance Dust with a soft dry cloth, running with the direction the streaks travel rather than across them. Use a soft brush or a cloth wrapped over two fingers to reach the inner wall of the egg-shaped opening. Blot spills immediately and dry the plane completely; standing liquid will leave a mark on a satin surface. Set coasters and felt pads under ceramics, candles and anything with a gritty or metal foot. Keep the console out of direct sun and away from radiators, vents and open fires to protect both colour and sheen. Never use bleach, solvent cleaners or scouring pads; a barely damp cloth with a mild soap is enough. Wax or condition it occasionally so the lustre stays even where the band turns through its tightest curve. Lift with two people when relocating and take the weight under the sweep, not under the thin flared tips; check the sole beds down flat before loading the top. The base is one carved sweep enclosing a single void: there is no drawer, no cabinet and no shelf on this design. Because the piece stands on one compact sole, place it on a level floor and avoid pressing down hard on the far tip of the plane. Screen calibration can make the tone finish look warmer or cooler than it does in daylight.
