Why This Watch Matters The Omega Seamaster, a perfect do-it-all gold watch? The Full Story The Seamaster line has been a pillar of the Omega brand since it first launched in 1948. In the collection's 70-year history, it has taken on many forms, from a versatile, everyday timepiece to a robust diver's tool. Here, we have a handsome example showcasing the model's dress watch roots: a 1960s Seamaster Automatic with a classic silver sunburst dial. This watch features a 14k-yellow gold case produced by the U.S.-based company Ross. In the '60s, it was relatively common for Swiss watchmakers to send movements to the United States and have them fitted with domestically produced cases to minimize import costs. The dial has applied baton hour markers with thicker ones at three, six, nine, and 12 to differentiate the cardinal positions; these work nicely with the classic pencil-shaped hands. The Omega name and insignia also appear on the dial, with the signature carrying over to the crown as well. All in all, these solid-gold Seamaster. The case is strong with light scratches. The facets on the lugs are crisp. There are some marks on the rear side of the lugs from strap changes over the years. The Seamaster medallion on the caseback is very crisp and unpolished. The dial is in good condition and has developed a light patina throughout. The hour markers, handset, and Omega logo have developed patina; they really pop off the surface in certain lights. The lume on the dial has developed patina presenting in a generally dark tone and shows degradation at most of the plots. The lume in the hands has developed patina and aged to a similar tone to that of the dial. The crystal has light scratches. The dial, crown, case, movement, and crystal are all signed by Omega.
