Emily is a well-to-do banker's wife, but her marriage to Ed is suffering from a creeping sense of alienation and despair. Once an idealistic pair, active in church and community, their lives soon fill with distractions that distance them from God and each other. Without realizing it, Emily gradually turns into a dark shadow of her former self. The family pastor urges her to return to the church, to no avail.
