Artwork Statement SEEING WITHIN — 觀自在 is a mixed media work by Alex Fu, built around the opening presence of the Heart Sutra: “觀自在.” Rather than presenting the phrase as decorative calligraphy, the work turns it into a dark, textured field of contemplation. The layered black surface, made with wood and plastic paint, carries a dense physicality that shifts between written form, relief, and shadow. The red mark interrupts the monochrome surface like a point of attention — small, deliberate, and still. Through Alex Fu’s background in Chinese calligraphy and tattooing, the character becomes more than language: it feels marked, pressed, and embodied. This work may appeal to collectors seeking a contemporary ink-related object with spiritual restraint, visual weight, and a strong interior presence.
