Eau de Parfum A bewitching, idiosyncratic perfume, a portrait of marble white tulips and sap green stems, a sculpture of bending blooms in a vintage glass vase, impurities refracti ng and distorting the squeaking stalks and leaves. In general, tulips have no actual scent of their own, although there are certain varieties bred for scent. But they have an innate presence and personality. They are beautiful sculptural things; the multifarious cups and petals balanced on the rasp and snap of jadeite stems. Tulips raise their chalices upright when first plunged into water but then they dance and writhe, twisting and bowing in the light, never really settling into repose. Semence Douce smells of all this and asks us to ponder the cycle of life from birth to death. Tulips can be dramatic, operatic in decline even, heads weighing heavy, weary petals falling or drying like paper, still and transparent. The mix of sap-moist rice and creamy almond milk in Semence Douce suggests the lacteous stickiness of broken tulip stems and saffron lends a delicate pollen-coloured hue to the white petals. The mulchy squeak of hyacinths and amandine talc of heliotrope further enhance the abstract conjuring of the perfumer’s art in this alluring portrait of candescent tulips.
