Best in full sun and very free-draining, gritty or sandy soil, they excel in rock gardens, troughs, containers, green roofs and crevices, making tidy, low clumps that slowly spread by producing offsets. Plants are chiefly grown for their sculptural rosettes; mature rosettes may occasionally send up a flower stem with starry blooms in summer. Once established, they tolerate dry spells well; avoid waterlogged sites. To help give a clear sense of scale, the stone wall shown in our photos measures approximately 265cm in height.
