Our theme for the September issue is Growth. We look at how, given the right conditions, living organisms naturally develop to reach their full potential. We explore how by deifying economic growth and accumulation, Western society becomes increasingly driven by competition and fear, and heads for self-destruction. We consider the alternatives to this but notice the ways that calls to action from contemporary ethical warriors and promises of personal growth from the wellbeing industry often depend on the same old precepts of overwork, optimization and perfectionism. Meanwhile, in nature, we are reminded that dormancy and deterioration are necessary stages of organic growth; including in human nature where periods of grief, depression and adversity are often followed by emotional and relational development. And in creativity we find a type of holistic thriving that draws on adaptability, curiosity, connection and pleasure.
