Her legs span the darkness like the ribs of a forgotten church — poised, patient, absolute. The grotto around her is draped in cobwebs fine as morning frost, and between her legs a blue stream runs through the dark, dripping from somewhere above, threading through moss, bone and silence. The walls of her den are adorned with hand-painted ornamental skulls — each one gilded with obsessive detail — and the delicate skull of a mouse, small as a secret, resting among them like a prayer. Above, the meadow exhales in riotous bloom. Wildflowers spill across the mound in cascading waves of pink, violet, and white — so dense, so alive, they seem to tremble. Mosses in a dozen shades of green creep between the petals. Lichens cling to stone. From between the rocks, two small springs emerge — quiet, persistent, ancient — and spill their secrets into the earth below. And there, at the very summit, she stands.
