Image size 190 x 570 mm This view of Arran is from the south side of the village of Dunure on the Ayrshire coast and shows a typical summer sunset. I was brought up in Dunure and spent many happy days there as a child, swimming in the harbour and playing in the fields and woods around the village. We often take our surroundings for granted as children and it was only in my early twenties when I returned home from art school in Leeds that I really began to appreciate this view. The sky changes every single day and this view - especially with the sunsets in Summer - never fails to amaze me. It has inspired me to paint Arran from numerous viewpoints as you can see from my other paintings on this website. Arran - or the Isle of Arran to give it its full title - is the largest island in the Firth of Clyde and is a very popular holiday resort. With its miles of coastal paths, mountains and hills, forests, rivers, lochs and beaches it is no wonder it is referred to as ‘Scotland in miniature!’ A great attraction for many tourists is Brodick Castle which is owned by the National Trust for Scotland. The island also has its own distillery and the shop, cafe and the distillery tours are also very popular with visitors. Arran is a haven for wildlife with over 250 species of birds including the golden eagle, the peregrine falcon and ptarmigan but sadly the numbers of ptarmigan have declined to just a few. In an effort to conserve nature on the island the Scottish Government designated Lamlash Bay a Marine Protected Area which means no fish or shellfish can be taken from this area. I’ve painted many views of Arran and I plan to do many more!
