This 2-hour, hands-on workshop guides you through the fundamentals of setting up and using a sewing machine. We will focus on the "how" and "why" of using a sewing machine, trusting that a strong foundation in the use and maintenance of this amazing tool will help you get past the frustrations that might make you quit sewing. During the class, you'll be introduced to the mechanics of machine sewing including, sewing machine set up, parts of the machine and parts for the machine, machine operation and maintenance, and troubleshooting and correcting common snarls that can hold you back from finishing a project. If you are the type of person who like to know the "why" of a skill, not just the "how," then this is the class for you. Class size is capped at 6 students to ensure everyone gets their questions answered. No prior experience needed. Walk away with the knowledge to take on future projects. Skills you will leave with: Setting up a sewing machine from the absolute beginning Threading a sewing machine Winding a bobbin Changing a needle Lockstitch sewing Using the backstitch The why behind the threads and needles used Stitching options and configurations Workshop Hours: This is a 2-hour one time class. Starting in September 2026, classes are offered: Every Wednesday, from 6pm-8pm. Two Fridays a month, from 6pm-8pm. One Saturday a month, from 3pm-5pm. However, they are transferable. You are welcome to give or sell your ticket to someone else if you cannot attend your scheduled class. Frequently Asked Questions Can my child take the Sewing Machine Basics Class? Yes, however young people under 14 years old must attend with an adult chaperone, who is also registered to take the class. Participants 14 years old and older may take the class without a parent or responsible chaperone present during the class. Do I need to bring my own sewing machine? No, we have plenty of sewing machines in the studio. However, if you have a machine you would like to understand better, and use during the class, you are welcome to bring it. Can your studio accomodate a wheelchair? Yes! Give us a heads up when you register so we can make sure to reserve a space at the most accessible table and machine.
