I am a Sgraffito Square Plate. A lotus grows out of mud like ceramic clay is sourced from the soil - A beauty so deep that is planted within the soul. Curator's Notes Momoko Otani achieves the perfect balance of decoration and simplicity with her all white sgraffito serving dishes. At once peaking interest with intricate lotus etchings while remaining quiet with a white on white palette. The pieces remain elegant backgrounds for serving elaborate dishes, dessert or a colourful selection of fruit. Sgraffito is derived from the Italian word “scratch”. It is a technique of applying layers of slip onto a ceramic form and, while semi-dry, removing and etching certain areas to create a contrasting surface design. Momoko’s works are inspired by her love of lotuses and banana leaves. Her white sgraffito series display lotus buds and petals in bloom. Each piece is one-of-a-kind, featuring unique variations.
