From her earliest memory, Shalini had always worked collecting firewood and cow dung to sell in the village as fuel for cooking. When her family took on a large debt after her father got sick, the loan shark who lent the money was threatening to put her mother in prison. In anguish, Shalini's mother sent her to a rock quarry to have the debt cleared. In the quarry, she was bullied by other children, and her food was often stolen. After 4 years in the quarry, Shalini was rescued by one of our teams. Today, Shalini is 10 years old. She attends school and is learning to read, write and do math.
