Shango Batea – Hand-Carved Wooden Batea for Changó Altar & Orisha Ceremony Some sacred objects don't just hold things. They hold power. The Batea de Shango is one of the most recognizable and revered pieces in all of Santería. This hand-carved wooden batea — approximately 12" x 12" x 4" — is the traditional vessel used to house the otanes (sacred stones) and implements of Shango (Changó), the thundering king of the Orishas. Round, deep, and carved from wood in honor of his connection to the forest and the sacred Oshe, this batea is where Shango lives on your altar. Shango is the Orisha of thunder, lightning, fire, drumming, dance, and justice. Once a historical Yoruba king of Oyo, he was deified after death and remains one of the most widely venerated Orishas across the African diaspora — in Cuba, Brazil, Trinidad, and beyond. His presence commands respect. His altar deserves nothing less. This is not decoration. It is doctrine. The batea is the throne of the king, and placing his tools within it is an act of recognition: that Shango reigns, that his justice is real, and that his Ashé dwells in your home. Whether you are receiving Shango, setting up his throne for a celebration, or honoring him as a crowned Olorisha, this batea is built to hold everything he is. Solid. Carved. Ready for the king.
