Shanxi, circa 1880 This understated table is narrow enough to fit in smaller spaces, ideal as a console or side table. It is in a classic Chinese 'An' design, with rounded legs recessed beneath the table's surface, supported with single stretchers at the front and back and double stretchers at the side. Made from elm wood, the legs still largely have the original dark lacquer in place, but the table top is worn to the natural colour of the wood, displaying its lovely wide grain and character. The traditional construction of the table is clear, with a central panel set within wide frames and the tenon ends where the legs slot into the table top easily visible at each corner. A classic Chinese design dating back centuries, the character of the wood and simplicity of style would make the table a lovely addition to any room.
