Preparation Pre-lapped stones Shapton Pro stones are preliminarily lapped and do not require lapping after purchase. White #120 Extra coarse For quick steel removal, chipped edges, and pitted edges. Leaves a coarse but consistent scratch pattern. Moss #220 Very coarse For fast steel removal in stainless and powder metals with a softer scratch pattern than #120. Blue-Black #320 Coarse For high-carbon steel removal and a cleaner scratch pattern before moving to #1000. Orange #1000 Medium coarse A popular intermediate stone for moderate stock removal before polishing stages. Blue #1500 Medium A slightly finer intermediate stone with reasonable cutting speed that starts to polish the edge. Green #2000 Medium A finer intermediate stone that still removes steel efficiently while beginning to polish the edge. Wine #5000 Fine The first polishing stone in the progression. Dense, refined, and still capable of light metal removal. Melon #8000 Very fine A polishing stone that leaves a very fine finish with a microscopically fine scratch pattern.
