Ceramic sticks are useful for the final edge. They leave a surface that is almost polished. It is a bit coarser than the Viking whetstones shown above. I have two lengths, both abo ut .375" (3/8") in diameter; These would be easier to carry in the field than the plates. They are quite brittle, so some care is indicated.
