The Shell Dining Chair is indicative of Barber & Osgerby’s plywood explorations for Isokon. Fascinated by creating a three-dimensional structural form from sheet material alone, th ey set out to create a paper-thin chair that delivers strength and comfort equally. The design was developed through studies in folding flat materials to create structure. The Shell Dining Chair is technically sophisticated, demonstrating both physical and visual lightness, and eliminating mechanical fixings. It is a particularly elegant object, making full use of the curves and graceful lines that plywood achieve best. Designed in 2000.
