The ShinMaywa US-2 (originally Shin Meiwa) is a large, four-engine turboprop amphibious short takeoff and landing (STOL) aircraft operated primarily by the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF) for air-sea search and rescue (SAR) operations. Introduced into service in 2007 as the successor to the older US-1A, it stands out globally as one of the very few modern open-ocean flying boats still in production. A total of 9 ShinMaywa US-2 amphibious aircraft have been built. Produced by ShinMaywa Industries for the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF), this search-and-rescue aircraft has been in service since 2007.
