The slightly greater heft of the cast-iron base, compared to other metals, helps keep the cut smooth. The chip breaker helps ''break'' and curl the shavings to minimize tear out ahead of the cutting edge. It also supports the blade to reduce chatter. The mouth opening is easy to adjust because of the knurled brass adjusting nut.
