Can I take Paleo Protein if I’m allergic to tree nuts? My Paleo Protein contains MCT oil derived from coconuts. Scientifically speaking coconuts are not tree nuts, they are in fact fruits classified as a “drupe.” Other drupes include palm fruit, peaches, berries, plums, and apricots. However, because the FDA has lumped coconuts in a group with other tree nuts for labeling purposes, etc., I am required to list them as a potential allergen. In fact, true coconut allergy is actually extremely rare with only a few cases reported in the medical literature. If you have a diagnosed tree nut allergy, please speak with your healthcare provider before consuming any products containing coconut.
