Eau de Parfum This beguiling scent is Stora Skuggan’s rendition of Silphium (Laserwort/Laser) a renowned botanical herb, now extinct but in Roman times was as valuable as gold due to its unique gustatory flavour and use in medicines and aphrodisiacs, as a preservative and in animal feed. It was native to Cyrene, located in modern day Libya. Not a particularly beautiful plant, but as with many things, the true beauty and treasure lay within, in this case a pungent aromatic sap dried used in its multifarious ways. Silphium is gloriously eccentric and out of time. A doomed herbaceous thing of textural originality. It is one thing to want to recreate something, but another thing altogether to make it so beautifully wearable. A delicately calibrated silphium accord of rubbed and slightly sulphurous green opens the perfume, combined with geranium, zesty ginger, clove and the ambergris insouciance of gum cistus. This also functions as a fixative, holding deepening traces of the accord throughout the drydown. The chill spikes of the top notes cede to tobacco and cinnamon. It is the atmospheric mingle of medicinal and culinary that creates soft tension within Silphium. Fumes of frankincense, malleable leather and woods rise from the base and provide a soft gentle ending. It is a tricky perfume to classify and that is perhaps the point, the echo of a Roman past filtered through the contemporary lens of hip Swedes.
