Sioux Elder - Oil on Linen 20"H x 16"W The native Sioux have a special reverence for their tribal elders. If you go on the reservation and need to ask permission for something, it' s an elder you must talk to. The younger leaders ask advice and listen to the words that come from the members of the tribe who have seen and know much. In fact, the word elder is one of reverence and high regard among the Sioux. I met this man when I was in South Dakota and though he spoke little of my language, and I, none of his, I could see in his eyes that he had lived a good life and was wise beyond his years. My purpose in this painting was to show the nobility and wisdom that sat in front of me. Steve Atkinson, OPA At my very core, I’m a storyteller and I strive to infuse my paintings with those stories that excite me. Stories of the American west are always front and center. Cowboys, cattle, action scenes and moments of quiet contemplation are what I love. The authenticity of historical scenes or telling the story of today’s working cowboy is essential to my work. It’s really all about what the painting has to say that makes it personal and unique. Most days I can be found in painting in my studio, but I also love to paint en plein air. Since 2009, I have made my home in Prescott, Arizona, in the very heart of the subject matter that fills my soul. Show more
