The Sizen vase is a small stoneware bud vase in a multicolour glaze, named after a friend of the studio who spent years pointing out, at dinners and without invitation, that nothing here had ever been named after him. The grudge was quiet, patient, and ultimately effective: since 2015 there has been a Sizen, and he has not brought it up once, which we take as satisfaction. The glaze does what a wabi sabi vase should do — it pools, varies, and lands slightly differently on every firing, so the piece that arrives is the only one exactly like it. One stem is the intended load; two will fit. It suits a bedside table, a kitchen ledge, or the end of a bookshelf without asking the room to reorganize around it. Shaped by hand at Chive Ceramics Studio, originally to settle an argument, and kept in production because it turned out to deserve the name.
