Scutellaria ovataScutellaria ovata, affectionately known as heart-leaved skullcap, is a charming member of the mint family. This lovely plant showcases snapdragon-like, tubular, tw o-lipped blue-purple flowers that blossom in lovely branched terminal racemes from May to September. It features square, fuzzy stems adorned with heart-shaped green leaves with a unique crenate-serrate and rough texture. Typically, these cheerful plants grow to heights between 16 and 24 inches. Heart-leaved skullcap flourishes in dry to medium, well-drained soils. While it loves full sun in northern states, it prefers part to dappled shade in Texas. Spreads by rhizomes and will self-seed in the garden. Plants may go dormant after bloom in hot dry summer weather.
