For all the trucks, half-tracks, and railways, the infantryman got where he was going on his own two feet. A rifle company on the march could cover fifteen to twenty miles on an ordinary day, and a forced march might run past thirty-five — done under a sixty-pound load, in any weather, often at night, and frequently ending not in rest but in a fight. The men gave themselves the names that fit: dogface, ground pounder, mud cruncher, grunt. Exhaustion was an enemy in its own right, and the ability to keep putting one boot in front of the other, mile after mile, was as much a part of soldiering as marksmanship.
