Sometimes referred to as a Melon Basket, this small egg collecting basket is 9 inches across, the size for children learning to gather eggs and for a backyard flock of a few hens. This egg basket can hold up to 36 eggs. It is built on two round wood hoops set crosswise: one forms the rim, and the other rises over the top as the handle and runs under the basket as its center rib, so the handle is fixed in place and is part of the frame. The 9 inch height is measured to the top of that handle. Around the hoops the basket is fully woven, rim to rounded bottom, with no wood base, and that melon shape keeps fresh eggs from rolling into each other on the walk back from the hen house. It is perfect for many uses beyond eggs, from using as a fruit bowl or adding greenery to an Easter basket filled with goodies for a little one. The sturdy woven construction of this egg gathering basket makes it an heirloom quality piece that can be passed down for generations.
