Eastern hemlock cones are forest engineering at thumbnail scale. These are not the heavy, woody cones people usually picture when they hear “pine cone.” These tiny, papery seed cones, usually less than an inch long, are one of the smallest seed cones in the world. The technical botanical term for a cone is a strobilus: a reproductive structure built around a central axis with overlapping scales. Conifers produce both male and female strobili. The small male cones release pollen, while the female seed cones hold ovules that develop into seeds after pollination. The familiar woody “cone” is usually the female version. The eastern hemlock (Tsuga canadensis) is a slow- growing, shade-loving conifer of cool eastern forests. As the cone matures, its delicate scales protect the developing seeds, then open to release tiny winged seeds into the wind. A tree that can become a massive, centuries-old pillar of the forest begins through a structure barely larger than a fingernail. Each cone is about the size of a US penny (RIP)
