The legend of the smiley face’s origin places it in 1971, when it was published as a symbol for happy news in the French newspaper France-Soir. Franklin Loufrani designed the smiley face for his column and invited viewers to “Take the Time to Smile!” Since then, Smiley has over become a happy icon that communicates positivity to the world.
