- A wonderful example of the large single-sided 'Thames' clock made by English Clock Systems Ltd London, circa 1940. - Made of heavy-gauge sheet steel, the clock is well worn and p ainted blue, totally original condition, retaining the glass and iconic hands. - The outer casing has an ever so slight dent seen in the first photograph and features the inspection door in base and 4 wall fixing brackets. - Rewired and PAT tested running on the original Smiths self-starting synchronous movement. - Diameter of clock face 68cm, Width 76cm, Depth 21cm. Smiths claim an ancestry dating back to 1851 when a Samuel Smith had a shop in London, yet they didn't start manufacturing domestic clocks until 1931 when a new company called "Smiths English Clocks Ltd" was formed for that purpose. S. Smith & Son took a majority share in a company called "Synchro Time Systems Limited" in 1937 and thus STS became the industrial branch of Smiths, dealing with "Sectric" time recorders, turret and exterior clocks, advertising clocks and master clock systems. In 1939 STS changed the name of the company to English Clock Systems Limited Ltd (ECS). Smiths were undoubtedly one of the greatest British clock manufacturers of the 20th Century, once the largest clock manufacturer in Europe and produced clocks for the home, workplace, aircraft and motor industry.
