Smoking Loon Chardonnay is a California Chardonnay bottled at 13.5% ABV in a standard 750ml format, produced by Don Sebastiani & Sons. A brief three-month rest in French oak barrels gives this wine a toasty, lightly buttered character without overwhelming the fresh fruit at its core — a balancing act that keeps it approachable and versatile.Quick Facts: ABV: 13.5% | Origin: California, USA | Varietal: 100% Chardonnay | Producer: Don Sebastiani & SonsProduction & HeritageDon Sebastiani & Sons operates out of Sonoma, California, where the family has deep roots in West Coast winemaking. Smoking Loon Chardonnay begins with cool fermentation in stainless steel vessels, a technique that preserves delicate primary fruit aromas before the wine moves to French oak barrels for three months of aging. That measured oak exposure is the defining production choice here — long enough to introduce vanilla spice and toasted character, short enough to let the Chardonnay fruit speak clearly. The result is a medium-bodied wine that straddles the line between unoaked freshness and the richer, butter-driven California style.Tasting NotesAroma: Pineapple and ripe pear lead, followed by baked apple and a wisp of toasted almond. Underneath, subtle vanilla and light smoke add complexity without dominating the fruit.Taste: The entry is creamy and fruit-forward, with stone fruit and peach jam flavors building through the mid-palate. Crème brûlée and buttery notes emerge as the wine opens, while vibrant acidity cuts through the richness and keeps the profile balanced and clean.Finish: Medium in length with lingering impressions of fresh stone fruit and a faint toasty quality. The finish stays bright rather than heavy, closing with a pleasant, slightly nutty fade. How to Drink Smoking Loon ChardonnayServe lightly chilled — around 50–55°F — to let the oak-derived warmth and fruit aromatics express themselves fully. It drinks well on its own or as a food wine. In a White Wine Spritzer, its stone fruit flavors and acidity hold up well against the dilution. Try it in a Chardonnay Sangria with sliced peaches, pear, and a splash of brandy, where its baked apple notes amplify the fresh fruit. It also makes a solid base for a French 75 variation using wine in place of Champagne, leaning into its creamy texture alongside lemon and gin.Best For Weeknight dinners with roasted chicken or pasta in cream sauce Introducing someone to lightly oaked Chardonnay without sticker shock Casual entertaining where you need a crowd-pleasing white wine Pairing practice for wine club gatherings exploring California Chardonnay styles Frequently Asked QuestionsWhat does Smoking Loon Chardonnay taste like? Smoking Loon lands lighter and more fruit-forward, making it accessible for everyday drinking at a lower cost.Is Smoking Loon Chardonnay good for beginners? Yes — its balanced mix of fresh fruit, gentle oak, and moderate body makes it a straightforward entry point into oaked California Chardonnay without the heavy butterscotch profile that can overwhelm newer wine drinkers.Where is Smoking Loon Chardonnay made? Roasted or grilled chicken works well, as the wine's acidity cuts through the savory fat. Shrimp scampi and lobster bisque complement its buttery undertones. Mild, creamy cheeses like brie or young gouda mirror its soft texture. Pork tenderloin with an apple glaze echoes the baked apple and stone fruit notes. What sizes does Smoking Loon Chardonnay come in? Smoking Loon Chardonnay is widely available in the standard 750ml bottle. Is Smoking Loon Chardonnay worth the price? Smoking Loon positions squarely as a value-tier California Chardonnay, and it punches above its weight with genuine French oak complexity that many wines at this level skip entirely. For everyday drinking, it represents strong value. Why Smoking Loon Chardonnay? The defining move here is the three-month French oak aging following cool stainless steel fermentation — a two-stage approach that gives the wine noticeably more depth than most competitors at this price tier, which often rely on oak chips or skip barrel contact altogether. That restrained oak program keeps the fruit honest while layering in vanilla, toast, and a creamy mouthfeel. For drinkers who find fully unoaked Chardonnay too lean and heavily oaked versions too cloying, Smoking Loon sits in a practical middle ground. It is a dependable, well-constructed California Chardonnay that delivers real winemaking intention at a value price.
