The work depicts Salome holding the severed head of John the Baptist on a platter, with only the executioner's hand visible in the frame — a composition that shifts the weight of the act onto Salome herself, her calm, jeweled beauty set against the grim result of her request to King Herod. The ArtistAndrea Solario (ca. 1465–1524) was a Milanese painter whose style absorbed the influences of his travels: Netherlandish detail from time spent in Venice, and the naturalism and delicate light of Leonardo da Vinci from his years in Milan. He painted this piece while working in France, at the castle of Cardinal Georges d'Amboise, alongside French and Italian architects and sculptors of the period.
