The buildings that we design and build today will need to survive the changes in loading that comes with climate change over the next 75 to 100 years. Increasing warming between now 2100 will lead to wetter heavier snow on roofs and higher wind loads. Lost in the discussion of climate change is how structural engineers should be designing for these higher loads. The 2025 National Building Code has many measures that address climate change including going to longer return periods for snow and wind loading as well as significant changes in the load combinations. The talk will cover the history of snow and wind loading in Canada from 1960 to now and how climate change is changing the National Building Code for the upcoming 2025 edition.
